What remains

A changed destination need not make the journey worthless.

The first note in this collection began with a point on the horizon.

The question was whether the vessel would become stronger before it arrived, and whether that strength would still matter if the destination changed.

It is a question worth returning to.

Plans give effort a direction. They also give us a particular way to judge the result. When the expected outcome does not arrive, it can be tempting to describe everything before it as wasted.

Sometimes that judgment is deserved. Effort alone does not create value.

But sometimes the original plan leaves behind something useful: a sounder business, a trusted relationship, a better understanding of what deserves attention.

The destination matters. So does what can still be carried forward.

When the plan has changed, what remains is often the clearest account of what was built.
