What survives the year
Some progress leaves very little to announce.
A year is easy to describe through its larger events. An opening. An acquisition. A departure. A number that crossed a line.
These become the photographs in the album.
Less visible are the things that stopped requiring attention. A recurring misunderstanding that no longer returns. A relationship that became dependable. A difficult responsibility that finally found a willing owner.
Their absence from the year-end story does not make them small.
Some of the most useful progress removes a problem rather than creating an occasion. Once the problem is gone, it becomes surprisingly easy to forget the space it occupied.
As the year closes, I find another question useful alongside what happened: what became easier to carry?
The answer may say more about the year ahead than its most memorable announcement.
