We don't buy stories
A relationship is not an asset because it lasted twenty years.
A restaurant can tell you about the regular who has been coming every Friday for twenty years. That relationship sounds valuable — until the restaurant changes hands and he stops coming.
Software is similar. Years of code can sit beautifully on a server and still produce nothing. An invoice can have six figures printed on it and still be six months overdue.
Stories have a strange habit of becoming assets when a business is for sale. We prefer the boring things: people who stay, things we can touch, and contracts where someone has already signed their name.
The rest can come along for the ride.
If it turns into value, there will be plenty of time to pay for it.
