Not everything needs to scale.

good does not become a better simply because there are a thousand of them.

It’s 2AM - and Not everything needs to scale.

A good restaurant does not become a better restaurant simply because there are a thousand of them. Scale is often treated as evidence of quality, when it is really a characteristic of a model. Some businesses are designed to become very large. Others create exceptional economics within deliberate boundaries. A specialist firm, a property, a workshop or a small group of businesses can produce substantial value without needing to reproduce itself indefinitely.

Scale also change things. What works through judgment, proximity and personal knowledge at ten may require systems, management and standardisation at a thousand. The question is therefore not whether something can become enormous. It is whether becoming larger makes it better.

Sometimes the right size of a business is simply the size at which it works best.
